Understanding the Early Years Foundation Stage course (EYFS)

What are the objectives of the course?
  • To gain an understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage document
  • To have greater confidence in using all parts of the Early Years Foundation Stage document in the setting
What is the content of the course?

This course begins by explaining the contents of the Early Years Foundation Stage pack, explaining how the cards, Practice Guidance, Statutory Framework, CD Rom and poster can be used practically in all types of early years settings including playgroups, childminders, pre-schools, nursery schools, nursery classes, Reception classes, Foundation Units and day nurseries.
If training is delivered within a single early years setting, there is an opportunity for staff to work together to agree how to demonstrate their use of the Early Years Foundation Stage in the setting through self-evaluation as shown in the publication The Early Years Foundation Stage - Am I Getting it Right?. Staff work together to create an action plan to develop the effective practice in the setting.

What is the duration of the course?

This course can be delivered:
  • as a one day course
  • a single staff meeting or twlight or evening briefing
  • a short Saturday course
  • over two short evenings/twilight sessions
The activities during the training are varied and lively to give practitioners hands on activities to keep them engaged and interested. Experience of training a wide range of practitioners has shown this to be a highly effective way of developing practitioner understanding, confidence and skills and creating impact in a range of early years settings.

This course has been adapted in light of the changes to the Early Years Foundation Stage document (DfE, 2012).
