Understanding and using the Key Person approach
What are the objectives of the course?
- To understand the ideas (theories of attachment) that
underpin the Key Person approach
- To recognise the benefits of the Key Person approach
- To be aware of the challenges and
dilemmas in the Key Person approach and how to overcome them
- To reflect on own current
practice and skills as a Key Person and develop it further
What is the content of the course?
The
activities during the training are varied and lively to give
practitioners hands on activities to keep them engaged and interested. Experience
of training a wide range of practitioners has shown this to be a highly
effective way of developing practitioner understanding, confidence and
skills and creating impact in a range of early years settings. If
training is delivered within a single early years setting, there is an
opportunity for staff to work together to agree how to develop the Key Person approach in the setting. This is done
through an action plan format. If
staff come from a range of settings, individual practitioners are
encouraged to implement a development in their own practice e.g. develop closer relationships with identified children, create a common understanding of the Key Person approach in the setting, develop parent partnership etc. This course links to the upcoming publication of a book "The Key person approach - How to support effective practice in your setting"
What is the duration of the course?
This course can be delivered: - as a two day course
- over three staff meetings, twlights or evenings (2 hours each)
- over 3 Saturdays short courses
This course will be adapted in light of the planned changes to the Early Years Foundation Stage document in 2011 and 2012
